Volunteer with the

Cultural Compassion

What you'll do

Build friendships by visiting a family regularly in their home and helping them connect to local resources. Visit the library, find the nearest grocery store and provide practical advice. This can be a special opportunity to learn about another culture as a family.

Time Commitment

Weekly, 3-6 months

Responsibilities

  • Build friendships through visits with refugees in their home and around the community.

  • Engage in English conversation practice to help strengthen their language skills.

  • Help connect the family or individual to local resources in their community (bus, local library, grocery store, etc.) 

  • Provide practical advice (budgeting, sorting mail, etc.) 

  • Learn about another’s cultures, values and experience

  • Log your volunteer hours

  • Report any concerns to the Volunteer Coordinator

Requirements & qualifications

  • Complete required volunteer onboarding steps

  • Log hours

  • Report any concerns to Rising Village staff

Location

Its recommended to meet at the family’s home the first few times. Once trust has been established, you can begin to explore their community.

Additional Info

Cultural Companions will meet independently with the family or individual once training has been completed. The Volunteer Coordinator will help direct volunteer and be available for support and debrief at the end of commitment.

Training & On-boarding

  • Attend the in-person volunteer training (1hr) before starting at the Rising Village Office (multiple dates available once you apply)

  • Complete volunteer onboarding: Background check, orientation, references

  • Review confidentiality policy
